This course is an introduction to the use of fiber line, wire rope, and timber in rigging and erecting hoisting devices, such as shear legs, tripods, blocks and tackles; and different types of scaffolds and ladders. Also covered are formulas for determining the safe working load of these materials, plus safety considerations in hoisting heavy loads and when working at heights on scaffolding.
Topics: The use, breaking strength, and care of lines and rope used for rigging The use, breaking strength, and care of wire rope used for rigging Components and operating characteristics of block and tackle units Hoisting, hand signals used in lifting loads, and safety rules of lifting Proper use of wood and prefabricated metal scaffolding
Intended Audience: This course is intended as a general overview for any engineering professional that may require a basic and general knowledge of hoisting and scaffolding procedures, plus the safety considerations for these operations.
